Default Transmission whine??

I have a 2004 Z06.
When cruising a whining sound seems to be present from the transmission, or at least appears to be coming from below the shift ****, then goes away when I let up on the gas and then reappears when gas is applied.
Its not to load but I never had it with a 2000 FRC 6spd. Any ideas?

The only thing below the Shift **** is the torque tube... the transmission is in the back... with the differential...

Not sure what would cause the sound you describe - good luck.

Default bear with me on this one

Ok here goes: have patience I own an A4! I do have experience with lots of manual transmissions from 18 wheelers on down. I do know that sometimes you may get a noise that is "transmitted" through the shift linkage in a manual transmission. This is due in part to the fact that the linkage is of course connected to the shift forks which are directly on the transmission gears. So any noise that is not isolated by some insulative method will travel up the linkage and resonate in the gear shift lever much in the same way as a stethoscope. As a mechanic we used to touch a long shaft screwdriver on a running engine to listen for unusual noises. You would then place your ear on the end of the screwdriver and listen almost like a "poor man's" stethoscope? Hope this helps? Please be kind to me as I own a vert with a A4 OK, and not a manual?

I have noticed several people have brought up the exact problem you described. I have developed the exact problem you described.

What fixed the problem ?

My 03 Z06 whines a bit too, especially coasting to a stop and placing it in first, or hard acceleration in 3rd. Doesn't bother me much, just figured it is the character of a lighter car with less sound insulation. I also have a Ripper shifter and a Delrin ****, so I figure it is just noise through the shifter.

When I bought my modified 2000 coupe last year it had 17,000 miles with no whine.

A week ago it developed a whinning noise exactly as described in the first post on this thread. Others have described the same problem i.e.
step on the gas and you get whine.....take foot off the gas, whine goes away. It appears to be cominmg from the transmission area but can't say for sure. The gear shift, when you put your hand around it, has a very, very, vey fast but almost imperceptable vibration. It seems more pronounced above 1500 rpm and when in 4th, 5th or 6th gear. Performance does not appear affected.

No whine for 4000 miles than a whine. Something has changed and something is causing this.

I am going to my speed shop in MA. Monday for the purpose of them finding the problem and fixing it.

It would be helpful , if someone here has experienced this problem and fixed it, to let me know what the fix was.

I just recently bought a 2004 Z16 and it makes the same whine you described when accelerating in the lower gears. I posted about it at z16.org and some people hear it and some don't. Its not quite as loud as what you would expect to hear from a supercharger. Maybe I have one and don't know it... LOL.

Bearing noise? My Vette mechanic told me that the whining noise on my ZF6 speed(1995) was a normal bearing noise after a certain number of miles on the transmission...could it be the same thing on the C5? It may just be a normal thing. Back in the day when I had an M22 4 speed the whining noise came from the straight teeth in 1st gear and that was really a loud normal whine....hopefully its a normal noise from the bearings...
Interested to hear the answer on this one...keep us posted

It's the gears in the rear end. My does the same thing, due to hard driving.

Mine makes a sort of whining/whirring noise. But only in like the low end of 4th gear. When cruising at 35-40 mph up a slight incline or something if I remember right. It only does it at a certain rpm range. I am guessing 1200-3000 rpm?

Could you elaborate a little more. Was this replacement done by a dealer or yourself? Who made the determination that a replacement was in order? How many miles have you put on the new gears and bearings? I am just courious because this seems to be a problem a lot of us have. Any extra info would be appreciated. Thanks

my friend owns a shop and we put it up on a two post lift and started running through the gears with the car up in the air. It was obvious that the whine was coming from the rear. I then called the shop who replaced my gears with the 4:10s and desribed the issue. As it had been less than a year and only about 2000 miles on the car they warrantied the gears and labor. My buddy thinks they used the orginal bearings when they did the first swap.
