Recently, I started my 99 man6 vert, only to notice that the radio was acting odd. My regular FM station was mostly static. The Sirius channel was silent. However, the CD player worked as usual. No other apparent symptom - the engine ran fine. Odd.... About a mile later the CEL came on.
When I got home, I checked the codes and found P1416 showing as a current code. The Corvette Doctor lists code P1416 as "secondary air injection".
I reset the code and the radio returned to normal - and the CEL went out. I drove it for a week with no problem. However, yesterday the whole sequence was repeated.
Does anyone know what causes code P1416 - or a good web site to help?
If you open the hood and look at the drivers side of the engine just above the ehaust manifold you will see a pipe with a check valve in it. That is the air injection for bank 1. There is a similar setup for the passenger side which is bank 2. The piping runs from the drivers side and goes behind the engine to reach the passenger side. Code P1416 indicates there is a problem in the bank 2 check valve or somewhere in the piping between the drivers side and passenger side or on the passenger side of the engine.
This problem is restricting air flow to the exhaust manifold which is pumped into the manifolds just after a cold start. The high pitch whine you hear right after a cold start is the air pump running.
