Trying to decide whether I should go manual or automatic transmmison. 2 people are telling me: buy standard tranni. Dealer tells me that resale is difficult for the manual tranni. Need help to decide which way to go!
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
How are you going to drive it? Daily driver, lots of traffic auto with 3.15 rear end. Fun car with some daily driving-six speed. six speed bone stock will accelerate faster and I have been told is more fun to drive. Someday, I will find out :yesnod:

It use to be that resale was alot higher on the manuel... b/c they were hard to find....how I think they run the same. But back in 97/98 it was common to see MN6 cars bring $2k more. The MN6 is alot more fun. Feels much more powerfull.... I'm assuming all 3 of the A4 C5s I've driven have had the slow rearend (2.73), b/c there was a huge SOTP difference like different cars. They both have there advantages... if you drive a lot in heavy traffic a A4 would be nice... also nice if you want to let the wife drive it some. If you order the performance axle (3.15) and install a Powerloader ($500ish?) I understand the performance is equal to the MN6.
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
Mine's for "pleasure driving only" so this time I went for the manual (besides the wife can't drive a stick). Decide which is best for you...but definitely go with the auto (performance axle 3.15) if you plan on using it as a "daily driver" or in lots of traffic. My .02 cents worth.
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
First take into account the kind and amount of driving you will be doing with your Corvette. Secondly by all means drive both the stick and auto versions of the car. I chose an auto because I live in New York City and traffic can be very heavy. If you are buying used more than likely a 6 speed will have been driven more aggressively than a stock automatic car. Since 7 out of 10 Corvettes sold are autos I would think the auto would be easier to sell at a higher price. When I bought my Vette 6 months ago the dealer had 3 vettes(2 autos and one stick) when I last went to the dealer the other auto was sold but the 6 speed was still on the lot. If you decide on the auto order the performance axle.
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
I bought the automatic because my wife drives it too. I really like it but be sure if you do go with the auto you get the 3:15's as mentioned before. I don't think that you would be disappointed with either.
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
Your dealer has a point; it may be easier to sell the auto. For proof, note that GM sells many more autos than manuals.
Then again, there are also many Corvette owners who don't religiously read the forum, and don't Zaino their cars. We do not understand such people, and they should not factor into our decisions. Buy the stick; if you can afford the car, you can afford to have one or two potential buyers sometime down the road not know how to drive it.
If you're really worried about resale value, just invest the Vette money and buy a cheap car.
At this stage in my life I find it is much more fun to drive a standard tranny and row through the gears than just mash the accelerator in an automatic. Maybe when I'm older I'll feel differently, maybe not. Yes, it can be a pain in heavy traffic to drive a manual, but to me it's worth it. Just do what feels right for you.

PS: It's fun bragging to friends who can't drive stick that you can ;)
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
Buy what you want! I wanted a standard and got a good deal on an auto. I should of went with the standard. You will regret it if you buy what you don't want.
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
Don't do anything other than buy what would please you most.
Both the autos and manuals are wonderful cars and will resell.
I prefer a manual evenin heavy traffic; my Z06 is my daily driver. Others can't stand shifting under any circumstances.
Just one bit of encouragment if you would like a manual. It is very easy to learn how to drive a stick on a C5 as the engine is so forgiving. Thus, if it is an issue of learning or getting an SO to learn don't worry about it as you/she/he will pick it up quickly.
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
That is BS about not being able to sell the 6 speed. The dealer will say anything to sell what he has, I say the 6 speed, to me it's more fun. I drive a 6 speed almost everyday, but I drove my friends 94 LT1 auto, nice car but not as much fun as my 6 speed. I say go for the 6 speed but im bias
Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
Hey straightpipes,
I've had both..a 99 A4 convertible and now an '01 convertible. My cars are weekend toys only and I loved the A4 but I am enjoying the 6spd more.
Dealer may tell you about lower resale on 6spd because he has more A4s in stock/available.

Re: Standard and Automatic transmission (Straightpipes 1HD)
A4=ULTIMATE DRAG MACHINE! And you can't beat it in traffic either. At any rate, you need to test drive both and assess your needs and usage for the car and make an informed decision.
