Default Please help! E-Brake not working!

Hello everyone! I have 2000 Coupe. My emergency brake does not work properly. If I pull it as hard as I could, it some what works, but if where I park has some slope, then it doesn't. I had a dealer adjusted the brake, and according to the dealer, they adjusted it as much as they can. But just the other day, I was at a gas station, and my C5 started to roll!! Is it common? Is there anything I can do? If anyone can give me advices, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Are you leaving it in gear? I can't imagine a gas station would be on a large enough slope for it to roll while parked in 1st or reverse in combination with whatever amount of pressure your hand brake is applying.

Mine does the same thing, and odly enough it seems when it is cold the e break catches better. Also, sometimes the ebreak wont even grab at all, it will jsut lose tension and then randomly, later it will start working again *shrug*.

Mine does the exact same thing. I bought my car used. I adjusted it all the way and it still doesnt catch very well. I took off the rear rotors, and the inside where the ebrake works was worn down and had a ridge worn into it. The ebrake shoes were also worn down very much so. I havent put on new ebrake shoes or rotors, but I assume this will solve the problem. Seems like people are driving with the ebrake on or something. Or they were overtightened. Who knows.

The C5 e-brakes are poorly designed. Mine never worked correctly, and I purchased my 2000 new. I never brought it back to the dealer for adjustment, because I am scared to death of them. The forum was full of owners complaining about the e-brake. That and the column lock were the major complaints.

Yes it's very common, they were never adjusted correctly at the factory, it isn't really a design flaw at all. Do a search in here for E-Brake adjustment. If you come up empty, shoot me a PM and I'll fix you up...

Thank you everyone! I wasn't sure if it's a common problem or if mine was a special case. I do leave it in 1st gear now days, and avoid parking on hills. I feel some what relieved that I'm not the only one who's got this problem...

adjust your little star adjuster-thingie to expand enough so that when you pull up the e-brake handle, it fully locks at 45 degrees. make sure you don't adjust too much and bind the rotors, though.

don't know what the star adjuster-thingie is?

use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer.

Adjust so that it's a bit tight putting the rotor back on. Get eveerything put back together and drive 5mph in reverse and pull up on the E-Brake handle to adjust the shoes. If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to look at the pawl under your E-Brake handle...

Did that make sense? I know my head is still spinning from the "star adjuster-thingie"
