Default Power window motor problems

I have a friend who has a 1997 C5. About 8 months ago his passsenger windor motor stoped working. GM looked at it and said he needed a hole new rig, about 3 to $500.00. A local mechanic told him to get in there and tap the motor. He did and that fixed the problem, or for a while. The same thing has happened again. Its hard to believe that a 1997 with low miles already needs a new motor. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Mark.

It's a common problem. Search this forum, key word regulator. A reman motor will cost about $50.00. New motor $120. Reman regulator assembly about $130, new regulator $250 or so.

Very common problem on the C5's passenger window. The "fixes" you read about here are not really fixes; they're just temporary. You will either end up repalcing the Control Module or the Regulator/Motor. I just ordered a new regulator/motor to fix my passenger window. $175 at gmpartsdepartment.com.

BAD NEWS; GOOD NEWS:

I believe that GM had great power windows for years, like 1964 thru ??

In the past 8 or 10 years, I see all kinds of GM owners replacing windows @ $500.

GM had alternator problems from mid 80s to late 90s. (Supposedly, diodes were soldered near bearing. Hi heat = bingo.

GM has finally re-designed the alternator.

GM has a ton of A/C control units that go bad on 2000+ Sedan de Villes, DTS, DHS. The units on the passenger side are designed to move the ac/defrost/heater doors, etc. They go bad all the time.

Now for the good news: Ford too has some of these problems.
