Default problem with brakes and traction control...

2000 Corvette FRC I used to own this car and sold it to my brother. Car is in cherry conditions with low miles, however he emailed me with this...

"I am gettting a "Service ABS" and "Service Traction Control" on the DIC. I have narrowed it down to the Electronic Brake Module Control. Any advice if you had this? "

Anybody had the same thing?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi. Do a search on EBCM and EBTCM to look for alternatives. Does it reset after a shutdown/restart cycle? Get the codes. There are a couple of specific codes that indicate problems with this unit.

It's not a cheap unit, but I've read of a vendor on the forum who does an affordable (something under $400) rebuild with a lifetime warranty.

My car shows that error once in a while, but it's really intermittent. I suspect a loose connector, or corroded ground. Check all the grounds, as well as the various connectors. This includes the connector going into the EBCM, which is more or less right in front of the engine, behind the radiator. Big aluminum block. There are some other posts dealing with how to remove this, and how to check the connector. If you're going to disconnect the connectors, however, I'd remove the negative battery lead. (If you've set a theft lock code on your stereo, this is a good time to either make sure you have it, or remove it per the owners manual).

If you had the active handling option, I'd also suggest checking the harness to the steering column. There's a position sensor there that is used to calculate active handling response, and a loose connector there could possibly cause problems.

I'm sure you'll get more expert response soon - just wanted to throw in what I've learned from reading other posts. Good luck.

You say you have narrowed it down to the EBCM. Even going with the lowest cost rebuild unit the repair isn't cheap so you want to make sure you are right. How did you determine it was the EBCM?

This is the absolute best C5 Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) web site!!!

http://www.corvettedoctor.com/Code_Main.html
http://www.corvettedoctor.com/index.html

www.corvettedoctor.com

Go to “technical data base” and then to “Corvette ECM Computer Codes”. Then select your year car. Read the instructions and then scroll down to the "READ MORE" window to view the code definitions.\

Here is another very good site:
