Default Stall & gears ???

Hello all,

A quick and to the point Quesstion for those in the know I have a completly stock 2003 coupe automatic and I starting to mod heads cam headers and so on. heres my question I decided to do the rear first after many on here said it would be good to do first for later cam choices and such . I currently have a 2.73 rear in the car and was wondering if on a totaly stock car a 2800 to 3200 stall converter and 3.42 gears will be ok till I do the heads cam ect.. later down the road. and as always Thanks in advance for all your help.

Phil

A good combo and they will make quite a difference in the way your car accelerates. I would recommend at least the 3000 or 3200 if you are going for engine mods in the future.

I did it just the other way around Philsy. I had the H/C work done first and did the gears and T/C later.

In spite of all the nay-sayers out there, even with the 2.73 (not 2.43) stock gears, the Vette was a beast when it came to acceleration.

When I added 3.15 gears and a 3200 converter and a shift kit, it made it even "beastier".

Either way will definitely put a smile on your face.

I think you will want a higher stall if you do H/C -

I'd do both the T/C and rear carrier at the same time, so as not to duplicate labor, and the cost of labor 2X

Probably wise to go w/ a little more gear and little more T/C than you really think you need, - that way you don't end up longing for more

EX: I was going to switch from 2.73's to 3.15's - but for some reason, a voice said get 3.73's - so, I did 3.73's and a SS3200 stall, first, then this winter AFR 205 heads and a G5X3 cam - I'm very happy w/ the gears and T/C (haven't had a chance to drive w/ the cam and heads, but I'm GONNA LIKE EM ) - Only thing, I sometimes wish I'd have gone w/ a SS3600 stall right away - not worth switching now, but sometimes I wonder

Oh, BTW, this is on my daily (summer) driver

Have the 3.42's (don't forget the hardened shaft!!) and the Yank SS3600-heads and cam this summer. Don't go lower than the 3600 if you are going to h/c later -you will leave to much power on the table.
Yankeevette has the 3.73's and I have driven it -he has the 3600's as well-that is why I did this gears. His car drives fine -he will have the h/c done by the end of March so I'll try to get him to post. Don't go lower than 3.42's -I had the 2.73's to start as well.My wife drives the car every week and she likes the way it handles.

I have 3.90s and 3800 stall and I feel it is a very good combo. The steeper gear makes up for the 'loseness' when the converter is not fully engaged. When the converter engages fully, hold on Remember the higher the stall you go the moe important to install a second transmission cooler and deeper pan. The higher stall converter will generate more heat in the transmission and heat kills a transmission!

Thank you for all the great advice . I Talked to Rodney from RPM today also and I will be going for the 3200 stall and I will be ordering a new 3.42 carrier from Gene at GM Parts house. again thanks for all the great insight.

That is the setup I have. You are fine to do the gears/converter first. I did mine all at the same time, but plenty of people have done the gears/converter first.
