Put new pads and rotors on 2000 C5 -done this before - seated the brakes by going to 60mph braking down to slow but not stop, then repeat. Did this about 7 times when I got brake shudder. Went up to 60 mph and braked and got wheel shudder again. Any ideas what the problem is? Done rotors and pads on vette, cadillac and old cutlass.
1: new rotor may not be true, take they back and have the shop test they for warps.
2: make sure the base is cleaned before installing rotors, may have a bump or high spot stopping the rotor from going all the way back.
Do you have a way to test for runout with the rotors on the car? A dial indicator with a magnetic base?
I have to echo the idea from trammac, did you clean the hub surface? When I did mine, I noticed that there was quite a bit of paint (from the original rotors) left on the hub. Only a few mm thick, but that can affect it.
With new rotors, you can pretty much rule out hard spots (from deposits of pad material.)
One last idea; overtightening the lug nuts has caused problems with rotors. I'm assuming you did this job yourself, did you use an impact wrench to put the lug nuts back on? When my first set of tires were replaced, I had a similar problem; turned out the tire shop used an impact wrench and overtightened. The happy ending was that once I loosened and torqued the lug nuts, the rotor was not permanently affected.
I will take apart and clean thoroughly and check for problems. I torqued the lug nuts myself to 100 ft/lbs -did not over power the lugs. Thanks to all -I will reply if problem is found. New "wear" pattern on the other three rotors was concentric to center of the wheel. On one (left front) the pattern was in all directions.
