Default code P1870

Help folks, about a month ago I had a new SS3200 yank converter installed on my 03/A4. With a new Z06rear 3.42s and new exhaust, long tube headers and a vararam and a tune. After about 100 miles of interstate driving, I got code P1870, Transmission Component Slipping. There is a hard jerk in the rear from 1st to 2nd gear. Also, at about 80 miles an hour it feels like it shifts again and starts a winding noise. So I have to let off a little to get it to shift back down. My buddy says that sounds like the converter is unlocking at random, it's nowhere near 3200rpms...Any help would be appreciated....tom3257

Well let me tell you that my '98 A4 with the stock 3.15 gears is doing the same thing after 39K miles. I have talked to several people and they think that a valve body might be wearing and might need replaced. So the car is going into the shop wither Monday or Tuesday, I can keep you posted and what they find. But I have herd that if you change anything in the rear end you need to get the computer re-programmed, this may be your case, I don't know. I'm sure one of the experts on here will chime in. One person you may want to contact is Rodney at RPM transmissions. I have talked to him about my problem and he is very experienced and helpful.

I just spoke with my tuner, he talked to his guy, that told him there is a setting in the program he used on my car, that needs to be upped, since the converter. I am going tomorrow to have this fixed. He said it will take about 25 seconds. He has already changed it in his laptop. I will post results tomorrow night...thanks...tom3257

yep; on the A4... any rear axle ratio change will warrant a PCM reprog. The minimum required change would be to alter the TCC Slip table.
http://mikemercury.home.att.net/342.htm

If you don't do at least this minimum reprog step, the PCM will be falsely led into believing the torque converter is slipping (when in actuality - it isn't). It will then raise the line pressure to compensate. When that provides no results, the PCM will continue to increase line pressure until it sets the P1870 error code. It's this high line pressure thats causing those neck-snapping shifts

While the programmer is connected, also have the shift points changed to make certain you get redline WOT auto shifts, and that the rev limiter isn't accidentally activated either. And also have Torque management dialed out.
