I am replacing my top on a 1998 c-5 with new GM parts including a headliner. When I removed the top the "tack strips" were broken in several places, so I wanted to replace them. I am replacing them on the header bow and the rear bow that rest on the car. Also replacing the cables on each side of the top. They are held on with steel fasteners that will need to be compressed. Is there a factory tool I can get to do this with? If not, how do I get them to flatten out smoothly like the ones I drilled out? I have talked with snap-on and matco. They offered me no solution.
Also, if anyone has any tips or tricks I need to know on installing the top please advise. Thanks in advance for any help I receive on this matter.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but very few have actually reinstalled their top themselves Most threads like yours start with people getting advice from others on what to expect on doing it themselves and then are told to have a professional do it. I'm told it takes about 6 man hours for professionals to install.
Knowing or getting advice from an installer who does this for a living would be invaluable. Apparently, there is no one on this site that owns a vette and does this for a living
If you figure it out when finished you will be a hero on this site if you can give advice on how to do it and be done correctly.
