Default Squealing noise???

My vette has a noise, kind of like a belt squeal, but I think it's the water pump going out. My temperature gauge goes up to about 245-250 when i'm sitting at a light or stop sign. When I'm cruising, it goes back down to roughly 210.

Any thoughts, and how hard would it be to replace my water pump?

Not to hard to replace will take about a hour or a little more. I too have had a rash of trouble with a squeal from a belt. One way to see if its the belt or not is pour a little water on the belt as its running if it stops its a pretty good indiction its a belt not the pump.

If you don't have any belt squeak stuff, put a little WD-40 on the belt an see if that makes is quite.

240-250 is too high. Get much higher and you will have headgasket problems I would think. Find out why its that high. Check your coolant level and radiator cap (make sure it seals). Check your thermostat as well. Could be sticking.

I'm leaning towards it being the water pump bearing. I called AZone and a new aluminum water pump is 133.99. I'm going to pick it up and install it tonight.

Anyone have any pics or advice that could help me avoid any pitfalls before I get started?

I put another post up asking the same question.

If it is squealing it could be any of the pulleys. Since the temp is fine when you are moving and only heats up when you sit in traffic, I would check the front of a/c condensor and between the a/c condensor and the radiator. Our cars love to suck up dirt, leaves, plastic bags etc into these spots. This will prevent the fans from pulling air through the fins to cool everything while sitting still.

Do you see any corrosion around the water pump that would indicate a leak?

No leak. It sounds like the pulley bearing on the pump, because it's not like a belt squeal. I will check the radiator as well, but if it's blocked then it would heat up even when I was moving. Maybe not as servere as when I'm sitting still. I'll let you know. I leaving now to check it out.

Did you check your hamonic balancer to see if it's wobbling?...Also as mentioned the T-stat may be going bad. Get a machanic stetscope (sic) to listen for the noise with.

Default squeal

rub a bar of soap on the belt to see if it's the belt, then get a looooong screwdriver if you can't find a stethoscope to use, and put the tip near the squeal, and the butt end next to your ear.
Just remember, you will hear all the bearing noises you never heard b 4, and that doesn't mean the bearings are really bad, just that now you know what each sounds like. bearings don't squeal unless it's metal on metal with all the grease dried out.
on the temp thing, turn your air conditioning on, and see if the temps are different. the computer changes the rate scheduling so tat the fans come on sooner with the air on. also, try opening the hood when it's high temp, and check for the fans running. The temp switch that turns them on might be faulty.
slap the back side of the radiator gently with your hand, and watch all the dead bugs and little pieces of leaves and tiny pebbles fall out. I did that to mine, and I gt the temp down 5 degrees in traffic. didn't make any diff with the air on and both fans running.

Default squeal

Could be the famous idler pully squeel. Had my water pump, both tensioners and both belts replaced. Squeal stopped for about 3 weeks.
Still does it when its really cold. Think it is the idler pulley but I'm waiting till the damn thing really squeals all the time. Many threads here on idler pully replacemant and REPAIR. One member took it off and regreased the bearings. Good luck and keep your radio up LOUD and the windows closed. BIGHANK
