Yes the transition makes it seem very stiff. It either loosens up or you get used to it, I am not sure. I drove my brother's ZO6 the other day and I talked his ear off about geting a Ripper.
Yes it's normal. But in no time you will be use to it and what a difference. There was a post some time ago about cutting the spring to ease it but I like it the way it is. Enjoy.

Re: Do you have a stiffer ripper? (Don Baldwin)
Love the Ripper, it's one of my favorite mod's.. I drove my best friends 2002 roadster this weekend with the stock shifter (he was driving mine) and I complained about what a long throw the stock shifter has.. I couldn't imagine ever going back.. he said he really liked the shorter throw of the Ripper and didn't mine the stiffer feel.. I have a Momo **** on mine, an still have alot of the shaft noise... that's the only draw back...
I dont feel that mine is too stiff. Maybee I just got lucky and got a softer one. The biggest advantage of the ripper is how positively it shifts. My girlfriend, who likes to shift when I drive, can shift with her left hand! She was forever missing gears with the stock shifter.
