Hopefully it is only the key that needs cleaning. Could be the onset of the dreaded column lock problem. If you have an automatic, the dealer will remove lock plate via a recall. Otherwise you should consider getting a Column Lock Bypass kit.
i've seen this "pull key, wait 10 seconds" message only briefly... and it was a time i was TRYING to start my car. i've had it for a month now ('02 z06), and it has an issue of not starting on occasion. it takes a while, lots of turning key and pushing clutch in and out, then itll finally start. ive been sitting in parking lots for a while on a few occasions trying to start the car. i have the GM certification warranty still, so the car is going to the dealership on friday. the service manager thought it could be related to the security system. the column lock recall has been done (can turn the wheel with the key out). ive been told by a few people on this forum to get a dealership to reverse the recall work, then install the CLB. that's the most rediculous thing. if a "recall" is done, that should fix it once and for all! silly to have to reverse it then install an aftermarket part. any thoughts? i'll try another key and clean the one i'm using.

Read the Sticky at the top of this Tech forum on "Column Lock."
fwiw, this message is also displayed if you "false start" (turn key, engage starter briefly, but not start the car). If you turn the key again before the lock has time to reset, you'll get this message, because the computer doesn't "know" the position of the column lock.

Good info. I was curious because I have seen this message one time, when I turned the key on and off quickly. I was hoping it wasnt something major.

My 98 has done this when I started it quickly and immediately put it in gear to move the car. Shut it off, wait 10 sec and restart is fine. Same issue?
It doesnt seem like my column is locking up though my car is fully functional....It seems to only happen when it rains or after I wash my car....It rained in Dallas yesterday and it showed my that error twice and then the car dies. I pull the key, put it right back in and everything is gravy. I dont understand

the same thing happened to me after i had the column lock recall done. i believe it turned out to be a broken relay that needed to be replaced. this should all be covered under the recall at the dealership.
Well my car is not under warrenty any longer. How much am I looking at spending on something like this? I have never had to take any care of mine in for a recall.

perfect, dont bring it to dealer. get the CLB. 49.00..end of worries forever

depends on if it is a manual or an automatic. if it is an automatic, take it to the dealer, if manual get the column lock bypass. and it doesnt matter that the car is no longer under warranty. the recall still applies. does your steering wheel lock when you turn off the car?
i have read the sticky and i bought the clb but since i have an a4 i am not sure i should install if the recall has been performed. i have never seen the message but i can hear the lock cylinder move when i turn on and off so i am thinking that maybe the recall has not been done. should i get the recall done with the a4 and then put on the clb or if the recall has not been done do you think the clb will solve the problem by itself. i really dont want them messing with my custom tune which is what i hear they do. also, with the clb on will i not have to worry about the fuel shut off which is part of the wait 10 sec. message (as i understand it)?

anybody but me confused?
i also had the same problem with a custom tune. i have an auto. i took it to the dealer asked them to remove the locking plate and install the harness K as per the recall, but not to touch the PCM as I have a custom tune. They obliged and everything was fixed at no cost to me. I would suggest this route for an auto.
