Default changing the Diff gearing

I'm considering replacing the standard (2.42) gearing in my Coupe to 3.79's. What do I expect to gain from this change in performance and fuel mileage and is it worth it?

Is your car a 6spd or Auto. If it's an Auto it's a 2:73. If it's a 6spd it's 3:42. Do you want to go to 3:73 or 3:90's?

I put 4:10's in my car (from 3:42's) and my gas mileage didn't chage too much (about 1mpg loss).

Default diff change

My car is a 6 speed, the gearing is 3.42 and I thinking of going to 390's.

Go with 4.10's, you will be happy you did.

Couple things - the standard gearing is 2.73, not 2.42; and you would be installing 3.73's, not 3.79's

Also, just so you know, you don't just swap the gears w/in the pumpkin/carrier like you did in old cars - instead, you swap out your stock carrier for a carrier w/ the gears that you want -

Also, if you are going to do it, save yourself some $$$ and install a Torque Converter at the same time - gears and T/C will compliment each other and the labor is the exact same to swap them - therefore, while you are working in that area, do BOTH.

IMHO, 3.73's w/ a SS3200 or SS3600 stall are the PERFECT combination!

That would be pretty hard to do. He has a manual transmission. Again, go with the 4.10's. There are a lot of similar posts like yours and the majority say go with 4.10's.

I have a 6sp and I swapped from my 3:42's to 3:90's and love them to death. My car has just over 560rwhp and that gear is perfect for them. It puts the RPM's in the sweet spot every shift.

Go with the 3:90's!!!

I have tried both 4.10s and 3.90s and I like 3.90s much much better.

I imagine the 3.90's are a little bit more controllable, especially with launching.

Of course - if one is willing to mod the rear suspension, and put on proper tires when at the track... I can believe a skilled driver can control the 4.10's as well.

JBSBlownC5 (Joel) is running 3.73 with 700+rwhp and has touched 200 MPH many times.

Yes Tim, 3.90s are much more controllable and keep you in powerband much better than 4.10s which are just over kill for anything over 500rwhp. I dont drag race. I am more of a roadcourse and street person and they work perfect for my application. I am currently at 650ish rwhp and love my 3.90s. Its like in boost upto 3k RPMs till the real supercharger boost hits

I went with 3:73 that has 432 rwhp and I found it to be a great compromise between power and the ability to keep rpms low at cruise in sixth gear. A;most stock quite at cruise and screaming loud at ful pedal and high rpm.

I have a stock engine, and I installed the 4.10's and I love them. The 4.10's keep the rpms in the perfect spot. The gas mileage has gone down about 1 mpg so its not too bad.
