OK! I aligned the shifter today. Went thru the proceedure in the shop manual,
took it for a ride-same condition-would grind going into 5th.As I was driving and shifting without the counsul and with the shifter exposed it seemed that the shifter had alot of side to side movement. Went home and pulled the shifter out housing and all and low and behold? The locator bracket on the torque tube that the tang on the bottom of the shifter housing sits in is not there!!I did find the plastic piece that goes on.Put it back togetherand the plastic piece helped to firm the shifter up. It's 100% better-no grind but I would like to know how to repair that perminantly. Is this a common problem?
Thanks Guys for the help!
I had the same issue going on with 3rd and 4th gear, you could double clutch into the gears and youd get a grind free shift, I never thought of aligning the shifter I just always suspected the synchros on those gears were worn or out of place, is there an online manual out there with instructions on re-aligning the shifter?????
Thanks for the link. The proceedure that they show is just what I did . When that didn't work I removed the entire shifter and housing and that's when I discovered that the shifter bracket( on the side of the driveline support assembly-or the torque tube as we know it) is not there on my car.Hence the excessive side to side movement on the shifter housing! It seems like this should never happen. It looks as though the bracket was spot welded in place at the factory then they never finished to weld it. Even if I didn't have an engineering background, common sense dictates that you should have more than one small spot weld to hold that bracket in place.

The proceedure on this link that CKWHEELS sent is the easiest to follow
