Default burning oil?

i had my oil changed about 3000miles ago. the other day my low oil message came on. i checked it-sure enough it was low. i added 1.5qts and got it to where it needed to be. i know high compression cars burn a lil oil, but does this sound normal? i just got the car, so of course i have pushed it to the limit a few times, otherwise i cruise it.

Some 2001 vettes had a problem with burining oil when the car was driven over 3000 rpm due to the rings. I believe there is a service bulletin out there for the problem.
1.5 quarts is a lot during a 3000 mile period. Are you sure the lube place filled it up all the way? B/c are cars take 6.5 qts and some say it takes 7 to get it to the top of the line of the dip stick.

well they showed me the dipstick and said it took 6.5 quarts-so yup. how much would that job cost(for the rings)? im guessing over a grand at least. ill continue to monitor it...but i mean-the car is a beast, runs great and doesnt smoke too much(other than it having not so legal cats)

I would not say my 99 Nassau Blue is ZERO but at 7000 miles of combined road and track I never have to add oil. It might be a pint low at 7500 miles but I have never added oil. 99 Nassau Blue

The burning oil issue applies only to 00-01s.

My 2001 6spd used 1 qt per 800 miles. I had it re-ringed under warranty and it no longer uses oil between changes. My 2001 A4 uses about a half quart between changes. The difference is normal shifting is below that 3500 rpm mark. The rings in it are probably bad too. The difference is how its driven. The rings in the 01 flutter above 3500 rpm under light load... just how 6 spds see action! You could probably baby it and shift at low rpm and see reduced oil consumption but then who would want to do that with a Vette????! Good luck. Re-ringing was scary but they did a good job and so far I have noticed any negative effects. Some dummy purchasing agent in Detroit probably saved a half a cent per ring by changing vendors on the rings and caused this problem....

I don't want to hi-jack this thread but it seems to be a general discussion regarding oil burning and warranty. I have the extended warranty and my car is a 2002 Z06 with 30,000 miles. It is using 1 qt every 1,500 miles, is this considered extreme and will the extended warranty cover the repair?

My '01 ZO6 doesn't have any problem with oil loss between changes. Good luck.

Driving style is a big factor in the 2001 oil consumption issue. If you like to hold the car in gear and run it at a steady speed at RPMs above 3,000 or so (probably to hear the pipes rumble), you can cause ring flutter that allows the oil to blow-by the rings. Automatics in 2001 didn't show the issue as often because they shift to another gear at low engine load (unless the driver holds it in a lower gear of course.)

Those who shift up and do not let the car run at higher RPMs with little load on the engine usually see a quick improvement in oil consumption.

I wouldn't worry about a quart every 3,000 miles. That's still pretty good. FWIW, I put in 7 quarts at oil changes.

When GM was doing warranty re-ring jobs on 01s, IIRC the standard they used was more than 1 qt per 1000 mi for excessive oil use. 1 qt in 3000 sounds reasonable to me.
