I guess this is a good a forum to ask this question as any...
I need to get a trans jack for removing the driveline in my Z. I went to Pepboys over the weekend and picked up an ATV jack they had on special for like $69.00 but it looks like garbage and I'm not sure how long it would last. So I'm checking out harbor freight for some trans jacks.
They have two that will fit the bill. One looks perfect, it has straps to hold the trans in place which I like but its only rated at 450#. Here is the link:
I've seen posts on here before where people have actually used this jack but the weight rating has me worried. Only 450# seems light for a z06 rear/trans & TT.
The other one I'm looking at is rated higher but its also twice the price. I don't mind paying the extra but I like the profile and size of the cheaper one. Here is the other link:
I have the jack in the 2nd link and I thought it worked pretty well for the job. It is has some cheap touches though, as any specialty jack you buy for $139 is likely to have. For ex. one of the plastic adjuster ***** broke off of the adjuster shaft while in use. The ***** are just cast in place around the shaft, and the plastic split when I was really cranking on it. I managed to resecure the **** with a hose clamp and got it working again. I'll probably tack weld an old socket on it before i use it again though. The ability to securely chain the driveline unit down was nice and adjusting the pitch and roll made it easy to line things back up when re-installing. I'll be using it again shortly as my rear main seal seems to have developed a slight leak Here's a pic of the jack in action during my Tex and DTE brace install.

most stuff you get there is made over seas. How has that jack held up? do you use it often?
Not often but it works good. I am thinking about getting a second one for clutch replacement, so far I have only used it for removing the differential. It seems plenty rugged to look at, and it weighs a lot (or I am getting old )
I use the jack in the first link. I've done my trans twice and its held up fine. It also works I wouldn't recommend it to a professional mechanic, but for a shadetree guy like myself its fine and has worked perfectly.
I also used it last night to drop my H pipe to put in my new tunnel brace.
I also have an ATV jack from Sears, which works well to take down the rear cradle.
Using the harbor freight jack right now as I am typing. Works fine so far. Only reason i'm typing instead of wrenching is mother nature dousing us with rain.
