I am sure everyone appreciates seeing the pictures of what lies behind the steering wheel so they can judge whether or not to attempt the procedure themselves.
It might be worth pointing out that the column lock actuator is the aluminum housing to the right of the steering shaft and the locking pin is in the 4 o'clock position to the lower right. You can see it clearly in picture #9 (next to last)

Is your new steering wheel really orange, or is it red and the colors in the picture are just a little off?

No....it's really torch red, but under the florescent lights it probably looks different. Good catch on the lock pin identification. I meant to do that but it was so late that I had to just stop and call it a night. Hope the pics are helpful to everyone.

What is the recommended storage mechanism for the removed airbag?

Or is this a "disposal only" activity... and then - how and where to dispose of?

Just started to pull the the wheel today for modification of lock plate as above, but couldn't get the wheel out. I bought puller with the correct legs. It was a bit difficult to get the legs in correctly so they grab, but I managed. As I began pulling however it became increasingly difficult to turn down the puller and one of the legs actually broke off at the bend where it grabs the wheel and the broken piece is stuck in there. The wheel did move, but very little. I will get a new puller tommorrow, but does anyone have any suggestions as to why my wheel is on there so tight? For now I sprayed some WD-40 on the splines to hopefully help.

thanks,
-V

What brand puller are you using?

It may not be the greatest brand, but the wheel is on there very tight. I have never had a wheel be so difficult to pull. With splines on there I cannot understand why there even needs to be anything more than a snug fit.

Ya, well I got a refund and went to the tool store and got a KD puller. Managed to remove the wheel, but it was no easier. Very, very tight. One thing I noticed was the steering wheel on these cars is extremely light. Others I have removed are easily several pounds more.

do you need the lock plate compressor just to take off the wheel? I need to replace my clock spring on my car.

Thanks
