I have a '01 manual 6 on which I inadvertantly let it's battery run down. After jumping it the 'service column lock' message appeared. The odd thing is that every time I start the car the message appears and I just clear it and drive on.
No problems starting or driving just the annoying message. Now 2 questions: how do I get rid of the message for good and could the fact that I had jumpers connected to the car when I started it prevent me from experiencing the no start problems others have had?
Could the fix for a column lock problem be to hook up to jumper cables and someone elses charging system?
No,the service column message was due to low voltage to the column lock actuator (it needs sufficient voltage or a fault will set)...I would be willing to bet that your column lock is stuck in the "unlocked" position with the key removed (the lesser of 2 evils) resulting in the message...You will need to pull fuse #25 (BCM1 Fuse) at the passenger footwell fuse box...This will reset the BCM and give you a functioning column lock again...
And yes, this means that even if you had the recall performend (A4 OR M6),you can still get a "service column lock" message...Even though you no longer have a column lock on the A4  :smash: :seeya
