I'm new to C-5. My friend bought the Hypertech Power Programmer. Does this come with a chip, or is it just a plug in tuning devise?

Thanks.

You just plug it into your diagnostic port under the steering wheel. It saves your stock tune as it uploads the HT tune into your computer.
Mine took about 30 minutes to upload. You can reload your stock tune anytime.

No. I'm still using the stock one, but the HT has my fans come on at 210deg, instead of 225deg.....in case I'm stuck in traffic. When you run the program, it asks what thermo. you are using. Check out their website for alot of good info. www.hypertech.com

Make damn sure the battery is 100% charged before you start messing with it. My 98 camaro had the battery go dead during the programming. Bad deal, scrambled PCM and car would not run. Had to take it to the dealer and have it reflashed.

There is no such thing as a chip anymore.. Chips are ancient history.. Modern cars 1996 and newer have a PCM ( a brain) which does everything.. The Hypertech plugs in (underneath steering wheel) and reprograms some of the performance parameters of your PCM... Remember that your ignition timing will be advanced.. In the summer months.. April -September ,many (most) states add methanol to Gasoline ( some states use it year round).. Our LS1 engines do not like this additive, especially with the Hypertech advancing your timing.... The engine will ping like crazy, sounds like a can of marbles being shaked up in a tin can... Nasty!! The engines management system will try to retard timing, reducing power output even more... Make sure to use a bottle of TORCO with every tank of gas ( $18-$22 a can).. This will increase your Octane to 95-96. otherwise your Hypertech will be worthless this summer.. ... Don't even think about that crap ( Octane Booster) they sell at the automotive stores... It won't do a thing, unless you add about 10 bottles... Been there Done that
