Re: "service engine soon"- does this mean oil change? (skilawyer)
Hi,
No, that is probably not an engine oil age issue. More likely a problem with an oxygen sensor or something like that. But it could be a lot of other things,
as well. I'd tend to want to have it looked at pretty quickly.
Re: "service engine soon"- does this mean oil change? (skilawyer)
The service engine light is looped in with the emissions controls and sensors.. if something is wrong with one of them , the light will come on..this light just has to do with emissions related problems..

You can display the actual trouble code on your dashboard display:
-turn the ignition to ON, but do not crank the engine
-press the RESET button to clear any warning messages
-press and hold the OPTIONS-4 button
-while still holding the OPTIONS-4 button, press the FUEL-1 button 4 times
The system will then go through all the systems and display any trouble codes.
If it is scrolling through too quickly, just let it finish and then you are in manual mode. To manually advance to the next system category, press OPTIONS-4, and press GAGES-2 to show the next troble code. You can press RESET to clear that code from the computer memory.

Am i to understand there are some batteries in the door modules going bad?
I have had the car less than 1 week. this sucks. they told me all i had to do was recalibrate the remotes, and i had to buy $15 worth of batteries, now this too? Where are the batt.s located? What type etc? Thanks again. Steven
Re: "service engine soon"- does this mean oil change? (skilawyer)
No, there aren't batteries in the door control modules. The battery related codes indicate voltage problems as measured by those modules. There are two power wires feeding the DCM's - one high current and one low current (those are the Batt#1 and Batt#2). They all go to the only battery you have - the one under the hood.
Since these are all history codes, and you don't have any problems with your door controls, I wouldn't worry about them.
The SES light could mean a myriad of things. Since you didn't see any other codes, I'd have a dealer check it out.
Just FYI: when you hit the reserve fuel level, the CHECK GAGES light comes on. So the SES light could be related to other things too.

Did your message say "service engine soon" or "service vehicle soon"?
The 1281 code will set the "service vehicle soon" message for sure. I see it every once in a while. This seems to be a pretty common problem on these cars. But since the only solution seems to be removing the steering column and replacing the steering position sensor, I think I will just keep hitting the RESET.
Not all trouble codes send warning messages to the driver.
I get the 1016 code all the time also, but this does not cause any warning messages. My guess is that the other comminication error codes do not set the warning message either. I am not sure about the other codes, but they may not be sending warning messages to the driver display either.
