There is usually a clip on the front side of the shiftknob about midway up. It is in the front so it is hidden. Just slip a small screwdriver between the clip and the shiftknob and pry it out a bit. Then, you can pull it out with a needle nose plier.
The cap pulls off and the inner plastic piece detaches from the shifter by turning it ( I think I remember correctly).
The **** should slip right off after that!

turn the key to the on position without actually turning the car on. put the e-brake on. put the shifter into first gear. there is a small staple on the back side of the shift ****. you need to get a very small flat head screwdriver to pry the staple out. then the shift **** comes right off!
