I'm getting frustrated... it's rather annoying and I'm stumped. Whenever I accelerate, or decelerate I hear air escaping/ "ssst" sound.. which starts loud and slowly bleeds off. Now, normally I would presume it is a vacuum leak of some sort... however it is tied in to the transmission it would seem. The reason I'm having such trouble diagnosing the sound is because with the clutch pushed in, and I downshift.. the sound appears while the clutch is disengaged... and the air noise appears while I push the car in to gear... that just doesn't make sense. The only thing I can imagine is the sound must be a clogged breather on my transmission.. I did paint the unit when I build it, but I'm certain I removed the tape from the breather. Anyone have some input?
Maybe somone snuck a turbo or superchager on there. Are you sure you don't have an intake leak or something? Airbox lid not sealing properly or a loose clamp?

I have a vararam, and I'm pretty sure it's sealed... but this shouldn't be anything on the engine... because the sound corresponds to the transmission rpm, not the engine rpm since the sound appears when the clutch is pushed in and downshifting... the rpm of the engine is at falloff/idle while you push into a lower gear.
Where is it coming from? I get the same noise over my left shoulder. CHanges sound when i take my foot on and off full brake.
I assumed it was my fuel pump :-P
that is probably a vacuum leak/brake booster diaphragm leak. I think we most likely have different issues. The noise is most likely coming from your firewall where the booster is located... high pitched noises have tendencies to reflect off surfaces and give false perception as to where they are coming from.. when the car is running stick your head by the pedals and hit the brake.

You are describing the exact issue I used to have on my 98 M6. If I recall it would be this weird sound that would only occur in a situation as you've described. I actually lived with it for so long that I really forgot about it. This thread brings back the memory. Since then, I have added LT headers, a procharger, and Borla stingers. Needless to say, I don't notice the noise anymore. I'll bet a bunch of others have the same noise and don't realize it. It seemed to be as memorable as that ever-so-common belt chirp. BTW, that went away with the pulley reroute of the SC kit.

Is it just when you are accelerating or decelerating?
Try going about 30 mph and push the clutch in and see if you hear it. Then put the transmission in neutral and let off the clutch. Does it go away or change?

I have not tried this yet, but I will this evening. I'm sure it probably will do it, but I will let you know. Any idea what could cause this?
