Default C5 - How fast can It Go ?

Friends,
I have been reading all of the threads concerning C5 coupes and how
fast they will go. In other words the top end. Every one has a opinon
about top end; I would like to see a formula and or a graph. There are
some pretty smart people inthe forum ( I am not one of them ), maybe
one of you can explain to me what the C5 body style can actually
run flat out. Lets face it the wheel horse power in a stock vette (coupe) is not very impressive, compared to a Z06 or a mod vette.
Yet I hear speeds of 170 mph. How much horsepower is enough to
reach a flat out speed. I know that rear ratios have a effect on top end
and there are A4 that can be converted into multi speed trans that
suppoesably increase top speed and the 6 speed can have a effect
depending on the OD. I guess the question is 1. how fast is the C5
body designed to run and 2. how much horsepower will be needed to
hit top end and 3. how much over/under drive do you need ?
Thank you very much for taking the time to read these questions
and your responce.

I think GM claims stock top speed is 171 for Z06 and 177 for all other C5's.

Bump up the rev limiter you will get a few more MPH. But lower the rear gear or add more HP where you can pull in 6th they will go even faster!

I'm sure many results will be posted soon!

I have read that the top speed is somewhere around 170mph stock out of the box.

I hit 140mph at 4,000rpm and it was still pulling hard when I ran out of road. At a mile every 30 seconds, you better have some open space out ahead.

Not my ride yet - image courtesy of Badassride.com. He also has a real neat video of the car breaking the sound barrier - not quite but close. Check it out and turn the volume up - its pretty cool man

How fast can it go?

Faster than your skill can handle a problem that crops up!

My personal best is 118, down the front stretch at MotorSports Ranch.

Have a good one,
Mike

Well, it just so happens that I ran my stock '99 up to ~ 150 mph just yesterday. So we know they will do at least that

Really? Take a wild animal like a raccoon on the chin and see what happens. I hit one at about 75; it lifted both right wheels off the ground.

When I was a kid there was a wreck where 2 guys were racing, one of them hit a decent sized dog, and when they lost control the car was scattered over 150 yards of road (and so were they).

Don't think you're invulnerable; I've had to bury too many folks that had that thought, right up until about 3 seconds before they died.

Have a good one,
Mike

186mph here! But the car is not stock. And it wasstill pulling, not hard but it had some more to go.

Now that my problem has an ignition problem and is backfiring like hell, my best so far with that issue is 135mph (had more to go but I have to take it slowly or it runs like crap).

You can hit the top speed it will just take a while if you are stock, you will need a lot of straight road, I had mine to 159 BONE STOCK on I-10 (3:00 in the morning NO TRAFFIC) and thats a straight, boring interstate but I think I was at 5000 rpms in 5th gear and it was still pulling but I backed off, so I def think its possible.

Hit 161 before I modded the car and decided that was enough. When you are passing cars already going 60 mph and exceeding their speed by another 100 mph they look like they are parked on the freeway. Pretty freaky. All I kept thinking was please don't switch lanes.
