I have had mine to 160+. My rev. limiter is set at 6500 rpm with more mods and 3.42 gears so I know it will go alot faster.....

I hit 165 rather easily the other night and it was still pulling nice, but I shut down since I had a buddy in the car and didn't want to get pulled over. I hit that with over 500rwhp but I've hit that stock as well too just twice as long to get there

I can tell you the coupe BODY shape is capable of 200 mph+, as one of our locals (jb`s blown C5) has documented on tape!

Don't think you're invulnerable; I've had to bury too many folks that had that thought, right up until about 3 seconds before they died.

Have a good one,

I hit 105 on an empty stretch of I95, and I must say it is pretty scary even going that fast! The C5 can reach that speed VERY quickly. All I kept thinking was suppose a tire blows out, or you hit something in the road?? A wreck at that speed would leave NOTHING of the car and the driver...at least not in one piece. The car may handle really well, but how many of us REALLY know how to react in a panic situation? I think I'll keep my top speeds around 75-80 (allowing for road conditions) and just know that the car can do 175!!!
Please be safe EVERYONE!!!!

I totally respect your position and that speeding is dangerous.
But how can you enjoy a Vette if you never exceed 80 mph. I mean even in stock form it would take about 7 seconds to get to 80mph (takes me 5 now )??? I can't even imagine if you are already rolling. Then it would be a 1 or 2 second acceleration before you reach 80 or 90.
I am not judging so please don't take my remark the wrong way It is just that I can't imagine not taking my Vette into high triple digits once in a while.

I appreciate your opinion, but I do indeed enjoy my Corvette even at the speeds I drive. It is a convertible, and just cruising on a nice day is enjoyable at any speed for me. Don't get me wrong, I do like to "get on it" every now and then, but it is not very often that here in NY the conditions (traffic, road quality) allow it. Maybe as i get older, I am just becoming more conservative in my driving.
Thanks,
Rich

That is what the run flats are for. They do their job.

Not my ride yet - image courtesy of Badassride.com. He also has a real neat video of the car breaking the sound barrier - not quite but close. Check it out and turn the volume up - its pretty cool man

The dude has nut$ the size of bowling *****. Note the little yellow orange icon just above the speedo needle. Traction control was off.

Hi Bill, do the run flats really allow for blowouts at high speeds? I guess I just always think the worst case scenerio when it comes to safety. If the run flats will allow me to throttle down safely from higher speeds in the case of a tire failure, then I can drive with a little more peace of mind. Thanks for the anticipated answer!

My 99 Auto Coupe didn't even shift out of third until 140, then I backed it down. The road does go by fast.

Several of the C5 and C6 Corvettes from the Las Vegas Corrvette Association (stock and slightly modified) often hit 165 mph (max tech speed for the speed class) while competing in the Silver State Classic Challenge Open Road Race www.sscc.us . The 90 mile course on HWY 318 south of ELy is at an altitude around 6000 ft. I have hit 165 mph several times. I accelerate to 165 mph in 5th and then hold 165 mph in 6th. The car is still accelerating in 5th. It is nice to be able to drive a Corvette that fast for 90 miles and not have to worry about the cops or other drivers.

I hit 190 before I ran out of room in my old 99 FRC that made 418 to the wheels. I felt 200+ was possible, not big enough ***** to stay in it.

I hit 162 for a couple seconds on the Joy Ride Rally. But ran out of road really fast. It was the 10 frwy so at that speed a 1 mile gap closes really fast.

It's amazing how fast these c5's are, and what a good price one can be had for. I have had my 02 coupe to 150 a couple of times, and 120 a bunch of times. Most of the time I drive 65-75, or 45-60.

My friends bone stock 99 except for a cone filter intake did 181 in 5th, but it took about 3 miles to get there. And it was not lowered.
Over that you need a higher rev limit or 3.15 gears plus more power.
I think 3.90 or 4.10 rear in 6th, you would smoke the transmission since it is so overdriven.

You must have a radar detector that picks up roadkill and pavement conditions too!

You can have all the experience in the world and still bite the big one for something you did not expect. All you can do is mitigate the hazards, but it doesn't mean they vanish completely. To mitigate hazards for top end speeds they should be conducted on the salt flats.

Stay safe out there Mr. Invincible
