i've hit 130 with my c5 and 120 with my c6.both cars felt like they were doing around 60,very stable.i cant afford to go faster.my license is too important.the guy that owned my c5 before me had it to 190 but he must be crazier.also he had to sell it to pay his lawyer.if that tells you anything.it does 11.88 @ 114 on the track without nitrous.10.87@134 with spray.thats plenty fast enough for me and legal too.now if i could only make it past the first round of the corvette challenge i wouild be happy.so far i,ve ran under my dial and redlighted.i think besides my driving errors i need different drag radials.nitto's are not very consistent.they do make for some spectacular burnouts though cause you have to get them so hot that the car wants to slide the front tires past the linelock.then you never know if they will hook up or spin.
Regardless of your capabilities and experience, or what you think they might be, here's a photo from a previous high-speed thread showing what happened when a tire blew at 203 mph. The car didn't hit anything.......this damage was from the tire explosion alone.
hahah on my almost stock c5 m6 i'v hit 168 top speed but anything over 150 doesn't seem necessary...after i put in my 3.90's i'm assuming the top speed will drop some
Really? Take a wild animal like a raccoon on the chin and see what happens. I hit one at about 75; it lifted both right wheels off the ground.
When I was a kid there was a wreck where 2 guys were racing, one of them hit a decent sized dog, and when they lost control the car was scattered over 150 yards of road (and so were they).
Don't think you're invulnerable; I've had to bury too many folks that had that thought, right up until about 3 seconds before they died.
Have a good one,
Mike
Respect the power. There is NO PLACE in on any state highway system for these top end runs.Take it to the TRACK and don't drive like a FOOL on the street.Remember SPEED KILLS. J.H.
2004 Model - 155mph with the Roof down. Probally has more to go but...
First time racing DB9, Ran out of road.... then i slowed as i normally would for the junction (Same application of peddle). Just the old "speeds relevent" applied after long periods of excessive speeds, your brain thinks normal high speeds are slower than they really are... result thinking at 80mph I would be able to break and slow for a junction 15 meters away .... lucky no traffic.
2nd time i was going to blow my old record away but around 155 it wanted to change gear and a "Check Engine" light came on so i took my feet off the loud peddle.
Ok and now the Rant.
Driving fast needs no skill and it is indeed luck that keeps you alive. If i wish to drive fast I will and if you wont get out my way be prepared to take some abuse there are very few joys left in life that havent been nannied out of fun. So dont start the its Dangerous crap.
Dubai's roads need no skill - they are designed on american roads. Long straight and boring. This has a clear impact on your ability as a driver and you must accept that the standard un trained US driver is simply no where near as capable as someone exposed to EU roads. My long time driving of a Golf GTI along twisting mountain roads on a daily basis at excessive speeds and my karting experience I feel would would stand me well on a proper track.
Almost wetting myself at yes because driving in a circle takes years of experience.... go away.
I wish you ALL the best with your driving. You sound pretty confident! Good for you! Driving at those speeds(155+ MPH) requires plenty of confidence.Perhaps we here in the good ole US of A should come to Dubai and get some driving lessons from the real pros! All I'm saying is "try" to be safe for your sake and the other drivers on the road with families in their cars.

The fun for me is in the acceleration not the speed, I personally don't think the stock brakes and suspension are up to the task of anything over 100mph. The fastest I been, was more by accident, I was pulling away from a new viper. In the excitement I wasn't watching the speed which is a , fortunately we were alone and had 4 lanes to ourselves. I let a Porsche friend drive and he thought he was looking at KM/Hr (Canadian vet), he was closing in on 200 when I casually mentioned "you know that's MPH you idiot!" and his porche has never been the same since.
Happens every so often at Nextel Cup, Busch, and other events and these dudes do it for a living.
All that said, I think I need to have my '98 tuned 'cuz it started laying down at about 145 in 6th. Maybe it just wasn't accelerating as rapidly and it started running out of steam about the same time I started running out of ball$.

Don't use 6th gear, you will never get enough RPM to get in the power band, unless you have put new gears in your differential. On a stock car, from what I understand (140mph is my personal best,) a coupe in 5th gear will hit max speed just below redline in 5th, when power available equals power required to overcome drag. Since your drag increases as the square of velocity, it takes big chunks of additional HP to make it go much faster. On Z06s, they supposedly hit rev limiter at 171, but still have a little HP left, so bumping up the limiter gets a couple more MPH.
I do agree with all the other posters that anything much above 100, anywhere but a track or the Salt Flats is dangerous and unwise, given the state of our highways and the skill of the average driver (the other guys, not you!!!!) One guy mentioned passing people 100mph faster. Wait till Grandma decides she needs to move to the left lane and either doesn't look or can't see you a 1/8 mile back coming up fast!!

Good info! And I think it is dead on. I have to confess something really curious. I had a '56 with a 302 in it that I took up to 4800 rpm in 4th (Muncie) which calculated to about 142 and was amped. At 140 in my C5 my @$$ was puckered so tight you couldn't have driven a knitting needle up it with a hammer. Forty years will do that to you. the irony is that the C5 is FAR safer at that speed than the C1 EVER was
Anyone know a leather repair shop that can stitch up the button holes my @$$ hole ate in the seat cushion?

Closed course - taxiway at local airport a few months back...173mph...at little left for someone else...I was almost, no make that I was afraid to TRY to slow down...but wouldn't have passed up the opportunity!
