I've observed pictures with the PCV valve before the catch can (inlet - top connection) and after the catch can (outlet - side connection to manifold). What is considered the best placement for the PCV valve, before the catch can, after the catch can or doesn't it matter?
Well, that depends upon the catch can. The PCV valve requires lubrication so if the catch can really does catch all the oil, including oil aerosols, then the PCV should be positioned before the can. However, since most catch cans allow oil aerosols to get past them, it may not matter where you place the can.

The valve should go before the can from what I remember from the install instructions of my AMW kit.
You can see the PCV valve in the pic below, it is the fat part of the line before the 90* elbow.
