I would look at the switch itself. Its mounted on the left side of the transmission. See if its plugged in all the way and if so, put a meter across it and see if its got continuity when you are in reverse.
I've never physically checked, but according to the service manual it's on the right (if the arrow points to the front of the car as the manual states). Anyway, it's a plug on the side of the transmission. If it's not connected, you'll get your symptoms. The switch may be bad and just unscrews, but if it stopped working when you did your swap, I'd check the plug and wiring. You may have pulled a wire out of the connector.
99 6mm coupe I had the same problem that occured during warranty. Watched the stealership R. & R. the switch. 6mm is a no brainer job. Cost of switch is nominal. Good luck !
I couldn't remember if it was the left or right side and I'm at work so manuals are at home.. had %50 chance of getting it right! Thanks for correcting me.
I had the same problem and checked the switch with an ohm meter and found continuity. Since I culd find no other problems I changed the switch anyway and voila, the backup lights work.

My '99 had the same problem early on. After replacement, no more problem for the last 8 yrs.
I have the exact same problem currently, the only thing is my tranny is an A4. Could somebody tell me how to track down this issue on an A4? Any advice/help/pictures would be great!
