98 auto tran reverse problem
1998 AUTO 43000 mi. has been running like a champ! But after a 200 mi drive over the mountains at high speed I parked the car, no problems. But the next morning when I put it in reverse it started making a clacking sound that sped up with the motor bucking and stalled. In drive no problems. I needed to get the car home so I drove home. No problem. But still when I put it in reverse it starts again? The sound is coming from the back end.

With 43k miles a transmission is not likely to go out. You have 3 major component in the rear that could create that type of noise, the diff. not likely unless it is low on fluid, the axle shaft, and the e brakes. Personaly I think it is the axle shaft.

the lower bolts on the bellhousing had fallen out and a gap had formed. I replaced the bolts and all is good!
