I have a SY3500 and I've gotten the 1870 code a couple of times. At that point the converter won't lock and the transmission increases the line pressure to the max which they call failsafe mode. You'll probably notice a clunk when the trasmission shifts through the gears after the 1870 code. I just turn off the car and reset the code to fix the problem.
If you want to test to see if your coverter is locked get up to highway speed and gently tap the brakes. If the converter is locked you will see the RPM rise a few hundred when you touch the brakes. If it's not locked you will see no fluctuation in the rpm. The converter automatically unlockes when the brakes are applied.
I'm not sure why this happens. It might be something that can be tuned. It only happens on long drives at a steady speed.
When my Yank3000 was installed two years ago, it did the same thing. Lock and unlock in Drive only, usually cruising on the freeway. Really annoying. In third gear, it was fine. When I ordered the powerloader from Steve Cole, I told him I had a yank3000. After installing the powerloader, no random unlock issues in over 18 months. The problem you are experiencing is fixable with proper computer reprogramming. Your computer must know what your new stall speed is to control the converter correctly. The higher the new stall speed, the more of an issue this becomes. You might contact Steve and get his thoughts on aftermarket converters/reprogramming.
