A friend of mine said he checked into it and told me that it was a clear laminant Proceedure/Process problem that GM doesn't intend on correcting. Apparently, parts of these tops were contracted to other companie'(S) and that there was 1 company in particular that did not follow GM's Proceedures and specifications thus leading to this problem. Reading the previous posts and knowing that the rest of the car is bassically made of the same material as the see-thru roof, I don't see why there would be any problems in sanding and feathering the topside smooth and re-clearing for a brand new appearance. The clear will fill the sanding marks and then it can be wetsanded and buffed. If there is anyone that can shed more lite on this please speak up.
I am presently removing the coating. Mine started as the Passenger stripe, but is now coming off like small shards of coating.
Talked to GE and they said it is a coating called Lexan Margard. It can not be recoated as it is a heat, vacuum and autoclave process.
I am presently sanding mine, and am going to polish it with polishing pads made for cleaning lexan turn signals. I did a small coupon area (2" square) and it's been holding up great so far.
Once it stripped I will clearcoat and hand rub the results and see how long it lasts. Try to keep you posted.
