Default Loose Steering?

I bought a used(or more like abused) 2000 FRC about a year and a half ago and have been in the process of fixing/ upgrading it ever since. It seemed to have loose steering what I bought it but I thought it was probably alignment or some other common problem. I am now getting around to tracking down answers and have discovered to following:
  • There is no play between to the steering wheel and the input shaft of the steering gearbox.
  • There is no play between the tie rods and the steering gear box.

It appears to be slack in the gearbox itself. Does anyone know if the gearbox can be adjusted? If so, how is it done? If not what are my options?

I know you said that there is no slack between the wheel and this point but if the bolt is indeed tight then the only adjustment on the rack is to remove and replace.

I saw that post a couple days ago and immediately checked the pinch bolt and it is perfect.

The play in the steering wheel is across the entire steering range and not just the center. It feels as if the grooves of the pinion are not completely meshed with the teeth or the rack(please excuse my terminology).

I saw what looked to be the adjustment bolt on top of the rack. Here is what it looks like:

It appears very hard to get to though. I have read instuctions for adjustment on other cars and would assume its similar but we all know about assuming...

Anyone have any more thoughts about this?

If you decide that you need a new rack see this thread:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1777236

Then talk to Gene at GM partshouse who may offer you a deal on a new and improved C6 rack and you can achieve forum fame by posting your results.

I have the same problem with my 00 vert with 75,000 miles about 1/8 inch of play in both directions. I am going to try the pinch bolt, but the last time I had the car at the dealer for maintenance I asked them to check it and they charged me $85.00 (tech time) to tell me it was rack lash and not adjustable.
