I have the "Low Coolant" message that comes on randomly in my car. The coolant is up to the fill level where it should be. This has been going on for quite some time. Some days I drive it and the message never comes up. I check the level periodically and it is always near the fill line. My conclusion is that the coolant level sensor is bad.
Is the coolant level sensor in the bottom of the surge tank replaceable, or does the whole tank have to be replaced?
Anyone have PNs/prices on the sensor or tank assembly?
On a rare occasion, mine does the same if I am at a stop light, etc., on a downward slope. I just reset it once I am moving again. I check the water every once in a while, so I know it is full. Don't feel it is anything I need to spend money on right now.
I think it is very sensitive, much like the oil level sensor.
You could be losing only a small amount and it could be evaporating so you would never see any signs (you might smell them though). This can happen if you have a pinhole somewhere and it is escaping (in small amounts) as steam also.
Mine came on and I had only lost enough coolant to raise the temp 4 degrees above normal.
I'm still looking for the culprit, but adding a little distilled water here and there is no biggie. The cause will show itself when it gets bad enough.

Mine too. I believe it's programmed to wait quite a few seconds of having a low level for it to happen so nothing happens when you step on the brake, etc. Nothing wrong with mine, it's just at the back of the tank, so then the nose is pointed down hill, the coolant's 'low' in the back.....it only happens when the nose is pointed down for an extended period.
