Well my vette don't get alot of action. I noted a small leak at left side rear differential cover for some time now. I found a TSB on this issue. I replaced side cover o-ring and shaft seal. I filled it with 75w90 synthetic and LSD additive. All is well...or so I thought. Now 800 miles later whining/howling noise from rear differential. It is rather loud from 4 gear and up. I put it on the lift at my shop and find the rear differential side cover still leaking. I bring it to the dealer for BCM re-program (right side power lock and headlite work interm.), alignment and to have this rear differential issue looked at. As I expected from the noises I heard, rear differential needs to be replaced. Has anyone else experienced an issue similar to this? How often is it suggested to replace rear differential fluid? As you can see it is a 2002 with only 14k on it. Never raced or road-coursed. Should I change differential fluid with engine oil once a year? Still has original tires on it with 6 to 7 32nds remaining tread. I drive it like a vette but done abuse it. I was rather shocked by this chain of events. It appears GM has had issue with this rear differential from the jump, TSB etc? Any replies greatly appreciated! Regards, John
P.S. As if the sound of my rear differential going bad while driving down to Orlando FL this weekend was not bad enough. I got tapped in the rear yet again by yet another inattentive driver :-( As long as everyone is alright :-) The bumper cover can be repainted! :-)
If you don't have the extended warranty, than you are likely SOL. Probably the fluid got too low, they don't hold much to start with. You have a few options. Find a used one in good shape, maybe a Z06. Buy a new one from Gene Culley and install it (don't pay the dealer for the part). Buy one from DTE and send yours in for a core. You need to discuss with Phil at DTE to make sure the core will be acceptable though. Of course its subject to their inspection but it sounds like you have a bearing problem or something.
CTCorvette is moving to FL, you could have him put it in once you get it.
