Ok, i have done a bit of research on the 2001 vettes and many individuals claim high oil consumption or loss. So heres my deal, I replaced the oil/filter about 3,100 miles ago (going very soon to change the oil just soo busy) but i checked the dipstick and its almost off the stick. I also, recently got a low oil level warning. Is this normal to lose or burn that much oil on a normal 3k miles? The car has been driven moderetly, not excessively (no tire roasting/burnouts or driving it hard).
Easy maintence fixes? Certain easy to get to fixes i can perform? I.E gasket check/replacements or oil leak spots to look for? Pictures welcome.
Also on a side note, can the stock (standard air intake filiments) be cleaned oiled and reused or should a replacement be bought?
How much oil did you start with? Most people use 7 quarts not the 6.5 that is in the manual. Also, did you do the change yourself? Where was it when you did your last change.
The question still needs to be answered: How much oil did they use? The shop ought to know how much oil they charged you for.
If they only put in 6 qts (my guess), then you've lost a half quart in 3000 miles, which is totally fine. If they put in 6.5 qts, you're still OK.
You don't state whether you have an M6 or A4. Most (not all) oil consumption problems are with the M6s whose owners love to hear their engines rev, cruising in 4th gear or so.
If you have an M6, use the tallest gear possible. I'm in 5th at 35, 6th at 45. Obviously I have to downshift out of 6th at the slightest hill when I'm that slow, but it works fine for me. Improves gas mileage as well.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike
Please explain M6 and A4 i am a bit lost on these two, i just put a quart in a minute ago so im not going to worry bout it yet. What is a m6 vs a4
I went to look at the paperwork from firestone.. They used GT-1 Synthetic oil and it shows a quantity of "5" @ $5.xx dollars so it appears they only used five quarts.. So thats probably why i was low..

That's 1.5 qts low from the git go. You've just proved why you should never let those get em in, get em out oil change places touch your Corvette. "Cheap oil changes" aren't going to be cheap when your engine is damaged due to improper lubrication from low oil levels. But it's your car.
Btw, MN6 and A4 refer to manual and auto transmissions.

M6 is a "manual, 6 speed", A4 is an "automatic, 4 speed".
My $0.02 worth about auto vs. stick oil consumption...Us stick guys downshift now and again, which pulls a momentary vacuum in the cylinders, pulling oil past the low-tension rings. That's why I think the stick cars use more oil.

Argghhh!!! This is why I get so frustrated with these shops. How hard can it be to look up how much oil goes in an engine? When I change someone's oil, if I don't know, I just check the owner's manual.
If you're going to continue to use this shop, do yourself a favor. Specify to them that you want to use a full synthetic oil (no "blends"), and use A/C Delco PF-46 filters. If they balk at that, go buy one and give it to them to use. The filters have an excellent reputation and are inexpensive.
Then, once they're done with it, reset the oil life monitor. Easiest way to do it is to turn the key to the On position and depress the throttle to the floor three times within 5 seconds. You may have to explain this to them slowly if you want them to learn how to do a decent oil change on a C5.
Glad you found the source of the problem; good luck in training them in the fine art of competence!
Everyone should check thier dipstick after an oil change. Then you would know approx. how much oil was put in and how much was lost after the 3 k of driving.
But only Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, Pennzoil Platinum and a few more exotic oils like Royal Pruple, Redline and Amsoil meet that spec as far as I know....

In 2001 Chevrolet put low tension piston rings in the Corvettes. This turned out to cause 'ring flutter' when the engine was above 3K RPM with no significant load on it (such as when cruising.) During 'ring flutter' there is high oil consumption. If you like to cruise with the engine at higher RPM, you are going to use some oil in these engines. Chevrolet changed the rings under warranty in some of the engines. I believe they stopped using these rings mid-year 2002 (if memory serves.)
