Default T Stat Question

Has anyone just changed out the stock thermostat with a 178 stat only? Is there a need to use a programmer for adjusting the fans or will the 178 stat help keep the engine cooler just by itself? Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest the 172/178 TSTAT from Exit28. I think it's the best temp compromise, and you get the fan controller too. Plugs right in, no splicing or cutting. Looks factory.

Make sure you get a true lower temp. t'stat. Otherwise, it will just stay open all the time and you will wind up with 140 degree water temperature and little/no heat in the winter. I pulled out the 172 degree t'stat from Breathless Performance because it stayed open all the time. I switched to a Hypertech 180 and like it. Not sure if the one from Exit 28 stays open all the time, or it is a true lower temp t'stat.

Thanks for the input, I think I will go with the Exit 28 stat and fan controller.

Now I'm second guessing............Maybe I should just try the 178 degree T Stat and see if my car runs any cooler before I start messing with the fans. Whatdaya think?? Has anyone just tried this and have any feedback?

I replaced stock with a Hyperteck 172/178 before reprogramming the fans and the engine stayed at 190 except in stop and go when it got alittle higher. When reprogrammed fluctuates between 172 and 180. Nice mod , I like it!

Like he said, do both at once.... Especially the integrated TSTAT from Exit28. There are numerous messages on here from people that only changed the thermostat and not the fan controller wondering why their temps are the same.

I changed to the 180 t-stat. My temperature stayed the same, 194. The powerloader changed the fan setting and they come on earlier, not sure what temp they activate? It doesn't get as hot on the extreme end as before. Louisiana weather is very hot and humid which must affect the situation.

So I guess what I am hearing is that the lower T Stat only opens up sooner, but will not reduce the operating temperature??
