Default converting LS1 ???

Reading various articles it seems like that most of the differences between the LS1 and the LS6 are the intake,heads(valves),catalytic converters and cam. If this is the case can an LS1 be "upgraded" to the power of an LS6. I was thinking this route because I would think that it would be alot easier for any warranty issues (being it's still all GM parts).

Thoughts/opinions?

Revo1059;

I have been thinking the same. Talked to my dealer about doing this a month ago when I purchased my 02 coupe. He said his tech (who is very good in my opinion) would do the work after normal hours and if I wanted to help I could. He said he would cover all work under the 5/60k warranty I purchased. The tech worked up pricing and quoted $2700 installed (parts & labor). I know that the rwhp/rwtq numbers are lower that tuners are getting but the cost is less and I get a longer warranty.

I've posted on the Z06 side asking about the parts difference. I want to make sure that the $2700 includes all 02 LS6 parts that are different than the LS1. From the few responses I've gotten, the Z06 guys tell me to just get a Z06 because of the other difference other than the motor :mad I know there are differences but if I'm going to get a top end kit from a tuner why not GM. If you cannot use LS6 parts on the LS1 then how can a tuner port the heads, give you another cam & intake and get any results :confused:

I am nervous about going to a tuner. I did have Chuck Mallet install TPIS headers, 3.73 gears, ss brake lines on my last C5 (dealers tech swapped these parts onto my 02). I have confidence in Chuck's operation. I just hate to spend 5-6k and have something break in the motor. I don't want to tow the car hundreds of miles from my home (all the tuners are that far away) to get something fixed and being that I trust the tech at my dealership I was leaning this direction.

I talked with a friend of mine who is a service writer and he could not believe that the parts can be covered by warranty. Even though they are GM parts he said the car has still been altered from it's stock form and it wouldn't be warrantied. I was going to write Gm on this and see what their response would be.

There are some differences in the block and pistons from skimming the Z06Vette.com webpage. It's hard to tell if the changes are for power or reliability. Can your dealer get a Z06 crate engine?

I believe in the GM performance parts catalog, the LS1/LS6 block have the same part number (I think they are the same for '02). From reading the C5registry.com page, I did notice that the pistons are different. However, when you get a top end package from a tuner you get ported/polished heads, cam, sometimes ported/polished throttle body, sometimes an intake, sometimes a screenless MAF. Aren't these the major differences between the LS1 & LS6? Tuners aren't changing pistons unless you're getting a stroker. If you need new pistons for reliability, how much reliability are you sacrificing with a tuner package?
