Charging system help please
This is a tough problem please bear with me for a sec and see if you can help, my friend and i are pulling our hair out over this.
So, my friends alternator goes bad in his 98 Camaro Z28(i know not a vette but we need help). He is running nitrous, and a laptop with efi live so he decided to get a bigger alternator to help with the load. While we were waiting for the alternator we did a battery relocate to the trunk.
We ran all the wires that were on the positive end of the battery to a new post that we installed, and ran a 0 guage power wire back to the trunk and hooked it to a battery cut off switch (NHRA Reg). We also ran a 2 guage wire from the alternator all the way back to the same switch. Other end of switch goes to positive side of battery.
We did try bypassing the switch, same result.
Regrounded everything. battery is grounded to chassy and engine block is grounded to chassy, all grounds seem to be working fine, engine cranks over great.
The problem is it charges fine at idle, 13-14 volts. BUT when you get on it going down the road the voltage drastically drops, like down to nothing on the guage.
Weve double and triple checked all the wires and everything seems to be good, we have the ignition voltage signal that turns the alternator on, and its working fine. (until the voltage drops when you rev, then it goes away, we input an artificial 12v into this pin on the alt that does not flicker at all and alt voltage would still drop when engine is revved)
After exhausting everything we finally decided that this new alternator had to be bad, so we went and got a new stock alt from pep boys and threw it on, it didnt fix it.
We have tried 2 different batterys, same problem. The only caveat to all this is the Security light is on and stays on, i dont know if this could affect the charging system at all, but i dont think it does.
We have also installed a new belt, and the pully on the new alt is the same size as the old one, weve been fighting this for a week, and were losing hair over it, oplease help if you have any info!
Thanks in advance
