leaving them in place can cause problems.
OEM wheels have cutouts on the back that allow them to stay in place and leave the wheel flush and square to the rotor.
Some aftermarket wheels do not. That means they can act like a space and should you only have 1 or 2 on, they act like a shim changing the alignment of the wheel to the hub and cause premature tire wear problems.

You are absolutely correct. I am not telling this story to prove I'm dumb, but to prevent anyone from making the same mistake. When I put CCW Classics on my Z, I intended to remove the clips before installing the new wheels. With a friend "helping" me, due to talking and not paying attention, we put on all four wheels with the clips on. I suddenly had a terrible vibration at highway speeds above 60 mph I hadn't had before. I called CCW and said what gives, you sold me new wheels with tires mounted. I was asked, did I take off the clips? I replied that I thought so, but I'll check anyway. Well, after reinstalling all four wheels the car was smooth as glass.
