Default Help with a C5 discussion at work....

This is my first post and I need a little help with some of my fiesty little employees at work. I drive a 2001 Magnetic Red Coupe 6 speed. My employee drives a Ford Focus ZX3....for those that don't know it's 0-60 is 8.7 and I'm pretty sure its quarter mile is in the 16's......he says that for 4 thousand dollars he could kick my vettes butt...and that I wasted 50 grand...bla bla bla.....

My question is...how much would he have to spend for his car to be faster than mine......if you could include what mods he would have to do and include what it would cost for a complete amateur to get installed somewhere.....

thanks

and by the way I worked at Frank Parra Chevrolt for 3 years and got some hook ups there occasionally........

I would say that he would have to do a complete performance engine rebuild and then add on a pretty high boost turbo to even come close to staying with your completely stock car. I would estimate the cost probably at $20K or more to keep up. And in the end he would have major problems putting the power to the ground from his front wheel drive bad handling piece of crap.

I don't waste my time even talking about cars with people like that. I have ran into many of them myself.

True...and that is the first thing i said....but of course that's what he has and that makes me sound arrogant I suppose. Clearly it is an insult to the Vette just to be mentioned in the same sentence as a Focus....but you know how kids are these days.....

here are the details on his mods.....for under 4 grand...

well, im adding an iceman cai, a catback exhaust system, underdrive pulley kit, new throttlebody, all that for under 2 grand...then a aerochargers turbokit, for 1,900 and 100 for the place to tune the turbo after some guys i know and i install it...thats how im going i belive.

horsepower...ill be at probably 200 with the first set of mods, plus the turbo kit adds 40-50% more hp, so i could be running 300 hp with 4g's

how fast will it be???

Last I heard, those things were getting recalled every month for something or other. Resell value is miserable.

He may be refering to the April 2001 issue of Motor Trend in which the Ford FR200 Focus was tested against the Z06. Motor Trend's conclusion was that this little hot rod was just as fast on the track as the Z06, but the way I saw it was that they did all this work to the car and it still only matched a stock Z06.

In the article they stated that the FR200 could be duplicated for only $18,000. I say there is absolutely no way that kind of work could ever be done for $18,000. It would take a heck of a lot more, even if you just bought parts and did the work yourself.

So basically, your fellow cow-orker is out of his mind. Apparently the Ford guys can make it to match a stock Z06, but it woul dnever be cheep: Not $18,000 and certainly not $4,000. If that were true, just imagine what we could do with $4,000!

Just tell him that any car can be made to go fast in a straight line. There are Honda Civics that will blow the doors off a Vette.

Tell him that he should go spend the $$$ & that you will run him 1 mile through a series of S-turns, followed immediately by a 1 mile straight-away. Then you proceed to an oval track & run 200 laps together.

Basically it sounds like he is just busting your chops.

Welcome to the Forum!

These type conversations are not worth the trouble. You will not have wasted $50K, if it were possible for his Focus to win. If you feel the need to tolerate him, I have a suggestion.

If he's so certain, offer to race for $5,000.

After he invests the money and "kicks your Vettes butt", he will have made $1,000 and stilll have his fast Focus.

That will probably end the conversation. :chevy :flag :chevy :flag

I call :bs

I did some research, and the creampuff ZX3 makes 103 rwhp and 110 rwtq stock.

Adding a $3000 Supercharger that claims 45% increase bumps it up to 150rwhp and 129rwtq. This was actually confirmed by a dynojet dyno.

ooooooooooo thats really gonna gonna beat a vette. BWHAHAHAHAHAH

I think it's funny that a guy driving a Ford Focus is so performance minded!

Just ask him about the 50 year Focus legacy... and the prestigious Focus racing record... and the raw head-turning appeal of his Focus. :D

Call his bluff. Write him a check for 4 large and run him. He wins, he keeps the free mods. You win, you get the car (you should be able to get a little more than 4k for it  )

I think what happened is that the Focus guy saw the dyno posted on the Focus forum & mis-read the curve as 300 HP. :yesnod:
