I have a '98. This afternoon, just for the heck of it I checked the codes just to see what was there. I found what I was looking for, which was nothing. Three hours later I get in the car to take off and "SERVICE COLUMN LOCKS" came up on the LED display and the car went three feet and died. I know there was something recalled on the 98's regarding this but I had it fixed at Bachman Cev. in Louisville. Have I done something wrong in checking the codes? Need help!! Thanks!
A buddy of mine and I were going to meet at a local corvette show one weekend. He called the night before and said his car was showing the dreaded "column lock bypass" code and would go 2 mph and shut off. This is part of Chevrolets "fix". I spent about an hour on the phone with him reading the forum and telling him to try this and try that. Nothing was working. Finally I told him to just unplug the harness that Chevrolet had put in there to "fix" it and plug the harness back to itself. Car has been fine ever since and he has bought an aftermarket fix for it.
Does your steering wheel still lock? Is it stuck locked. Does it have the K harness? Does it have a CLB? Need some more info. If it has the K harness and if its an older harness the relays were crap and they would go out. if the steering wheel dosnt lock, you can take it back to the dealer that did the work and they will replace the k harness, or you can get a clb and do it yourself.
Take the cover off the bottom of the steering column, you'll see the lock motor. Disconnect the wires to it, fallow them back to where they connect to another harness, eliminate that harness (dealer recall installed) completely and just connect the excisting wires back up to the lock motor. Thats iff you had the recall done. Mine did the same thing a month ago and trying to find info on this on here is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.
If you cant get the steering wheel unlocked. Remove the key and jerk the wheel back and forth (hard) a couple times. The steering wheel should unlock when you turn key to "On", and the problem will seem gone, but it will come back eventually. Get the CLB installed. I just bought a 97 vert, and this problem happened after 2 weeks, installed CLB and everything is cool now. Best forum post about this subject: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1015483
