In the event that ignition 1 voltage is lost during a collision, the SDM maintains a 23 volt loop reserve (23 VLR) for deployment of the airbags. It is important to note, when disabling the SIR system for servicing or rescue operations to allow the 23 VLR to dissipate, which could take up to one minute.
Also, the Service Manual warns that undeployed airbags, even after removal from the car, can deploy under certain circumstances. The manual recommends the immediate use of tool J 39401-B (SIR deployment fixture) to safely deploy (fire) the bags prior to disposing of them.
If you have a good relationship with a dealer, they may be willing to take the bags and fire and dispose of them. Otherwise ... HANDLE WITH CARE even outside the car.
Personnally, airbags scare the s**t outta me ... BE CAREFUL.

actually i sold my aibags, so i will need to shipp them, do i need to pack them a certain way?
It is legal to ship airbags for "recycling" purposes. I packed mine in a huge box (just in case) and shipped them UPS. I'm not sure if that was the legal way to do it, but I couldn't find a resource that actually made sense to me
The plug on the steering wheels is a bit tricky, and I can't remember off hand the trick. Just be patient. I've removed a ton of them, for race cars, and I've never had one blow.

Take a look at the FedEx website ...
"FedEx Express is a world leader in transporting dangerous goods, which can include many surprising items such as nail polish, cologne, perfume and even airbags. "
so i need to disconnect the FUSE 1st then wait a few minute to actually unplug the bags, correct?
I'd be tempted to disconnect the battey and wait like 10 days before I'd mess with the airbags. Even if they don't injure you in a deployment, the bags can do a lot of damage to the interior of the car (crack windshield ... damage dashboard ... whatever ... ) .... I can only tell ya what the service manual says .. wait at least one minute after disabling power to the SIRS.
so once i disable the driver side bag, is it safe to pull the passenger bag?
You should consider getting a set of the Service Manuals for the car. Removing the passenger side airbag requires removing the dashboard pad (top panel) and the manuals can step you through that too. You can order the manuals from:
That way you can follow the safe and correct procedure layed out for your car. The posted instructions above are for a 2001 ... your car MAY be different.
Removing and not replacing the airbags can only legally be done if the vehicle is not registered for street use. Basically, a race car. So there probably isn't going to be a lot of info available, other than the service manuals.
why are you removing the air bags, I have my steering wheel bag out and want to install a after market wheel, when I ask how all I get is flack, do you need to put in a resistor so the comp sees it and dosnt glow dash light etc
can someone walk me tru on how to remove my airbags?
what fuse do i need to unplug and what to watch out for
or maybe a link?
thanks guys
I usually allow only one female passenger, but for those that carry two go to the right side of the vehicle, lift firmly on the handle and pull. In a rapid motion, reach in and grab both air bags and sharply pull from the car. If you do it fast enough, neither one will have a chance to go off
