inside the car when it is quiet (like parking lots) i can hear a whine in the steering when I turn it right or left. it is not loud but I do not remember hearing it before.
Nothing seems to be wrong and there are no codes so I may be hearing the normal sound of the gear box.
Is it a whine in the power steering pump, or is the whine coming from inside the steering column in your car?
I've got an intermittent very subtle whine or maybe squeak that comes from my steering column - mine kind of seems to come from the area where the steering wheel turns/spins on the steering column - not sure what is causing my noise however.
Yep, I've got the same noise in the same location - just figured out I can make the same noise w/ my computer mouse (does that mean a mouse in the steering column???)
My guess is it is plastic rubbing against plastic.
This was the reason for my checking in with the forum. Mine has been getting louder. Definitely not pump, but inside column. Does it with engine off, although obviously harder to turn the wheel.
I tried lightly oiling a thin rag with a fine gun oil and carefully fitting between the crack between the hub and the fixed part of the dash, but no effect.
Help would be appreciated, it sounds like an old car with a bad pump!
Suggest you look under C5 Tech Tips on Corvette Forum, then look for "squeaking steering fix" Sounds like you need a spray of Lithium grease in your steering column seal area.
