I am trying to find out what clutch will work best for my set up. Problem is, I know this question is sort of like asking what cam is best, or which cat-back..ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers .
That said let me share with you my set up, and hopefully I can at least narrow it down to 1 or 2 choices.
Car is an 01 Coupe.
Mods- AFR Heads, comp cam, headers etc.. making about 410-415RWHP
Running Bfg kdw2's. I don't drag race, mostly street driven...might see the track once a year. No plans in adding more power.
I am getting ready to add a Level IV Rodney trans (stock trans is going, bad synchros) and most likely add 390 gears while I'm at it.
I was thinking of going with the C6 Z Clutch, but I've read about some problems with the pedal sticking. I would prefer not spend 1k+ on a Textrallia or the like. I think at my power level I don't need that much clutch.
I looked at the C6 Z clutch, didn't like the rotating mass and didn't like the number of people reporting issues. In the end I did the Textralia, I know its more money, but it comes fully balanced and ready to install. I also went with the x-grip for more street friendly driving.
I also did the Tex and so far, so good. I looked at the LS7 clutch but see a few threads with th LS7 clutch ending up with the sticking pedal and I have a good friend who had an LS7 pedal start sticking to the floor after 200 miles. Car was also a 525 RWHP 427. They replaced the LS7 clutch with a Cartek and have had no problems since.
JMHO but I think either Cartek or Textralia would serve you well.
BTW, I did the Z disk. I understand the X disk is more than enough for most needs.
Spend the extra dough and get the Tex. It is well worth it in the end. I didnt like spending 1K on it either, but after I was done installing it the sick feeling went away!
I also went with the Z disc. Its supposed to be a tad more stout than the standard X disc.
You get what you pay for Tank; go with the TEX and the Z-grip. You will not regret it later. I have it on my 03 Z with 450 rwhp and it is light years ahead of the stocker. Too many horror stories with the LS7 cluth and spec. The TEX is zero balanced right out of the box (be sure to index it when installing). Minor chatter with the Z-grip for the first couple hundred miles but smooth as silk afterwards. This thing loves high horsepower and NO clutch sticking to the floor even with runs to 7 grand (my rev nanny is set to 7,400). Do it right the first time!
You do get what you pay for. I have almost the same mods as you - 409rwhp, Rodney level IV tranny, 3.90 DTE rear etc. I went with the Exedy single (this is before the Tex was available). I love it. It cost more than $1k but it was worth it. Never slips, or sticks to the floor, and is sedate enough to drive in traffic. If I had to do it again I'd probably try the Tex.
Not to mention, the cost of the clutch might be more, but just think of how much work (or labor, if you don't turn your own wrenches) it would take to swap the clutch again if you don't like the "cheap" one you bought.
