Default Update on Comp Cams 918 Springs

I was looking at getting a set of Comp Cams 918 springs to go with my new roller rocker setup and cam. After talking to a few people, I was told to stay clear of the 918 springs because there were a few guys having problems with them braking, (mostly over on ls1tech). So I decided to dig into the issue a little bit, and share my info with you guys.

Just thought I'd let people know that I talked to Comp Cams about their 918 springs, and they verified that they did have a bad batch. They said that the batch was about a year and a half ago, and they tried to recall them, but some vendors disreguarded the warning and sold the springs anyway.

They said that the problem was immediatelly fixed and there is currently no problem with their 918 springs, and there hasn't been for a long time. They did recommend buying the springs directly from Comp Cams to make sure that you got a good spring, as there's no way to tell who might be selling some old springs that should have been sent back or thrown away.

Just thought I'd give you all a heads up.

Cool - thanks for spreading that info. I've had the same set of 918s in my car for about 5-6 years now with zero issues. I will probably swap to a double-spring and a nastier cam when it comes time to change them though.

Here is an update on the CompCams 918 springs. Last week I read a post on LS1Tech that Comp was upgrading customers old 918 springs for a newly revised design of 918's. I had just bought a set of the original 918's, so I called Chris May at Comp Cams. Super guy to deal with. I gave him my batch number, and he said there weren't any known problems from that batch, but that it would be good to upgrade them anyway. He shipped out a new set of springs that Friday afternoon, and Monday evening I had them at my house. I boxed up the original springs, and used his return postage label to send them back. I have been really impressed with Comp's customer service.

Here is a comparison photo of the original 918 (dark w/ blue stripe) and the revised 918 (shot peened silver). The new design is a little shorter, has a higher spring rate, and is good for .625" lift (up from the original .600" lift). I am glad that I held off my installation for these new springs.

The new specifications are very close to the PSI 1511 springs.
