Default How often do Blackwings need to be cleaned?

I have been pondering getting a Blackwing. I know it comes with a kit to clean the filter when needed. I want to ask those who have one, how often do you have to clean your filter? How long does it take?

Tek,

The cleaning kit is optional... not included.

The filter has in indicator on it that is activated by a vacuum within the filter. If the filter is clogged, the vacuum increases and pops the indicator in.

Cleaning involves spraying the cleaner on, rinsing with a hose, drying time, and re-oiling the element. Probably best to allow it to dry overnight, but not totally necessary.

How often? Depends on your environment, but I think 25k - 50k miles under "normal" conditions.

Good luck,

Good luck,
25k - 50k miles? That is a lot more than I had thought. I would have thought that you would need to clean your Blackwing every 10k-12k miles like a regular filter. Of course, I live in NM which is a giant dust-bowl at times..... I was planning on cleaning my Blackwing at around 15k due to all of the dust here.

From the Donaldson brochure:

"Cleaning your Blackwing high performance air filters is recommended between 50,000 and 100,000 miles on typical driving applications."

Not real familiar with the Blackwing, but I pulled my K&N out after 24k miles and it was so filthy I couldn't believe it. The ridges were filled with dirt and the whole thing was covered in grime. It took me 20 minutes with a soft-bristled brush, the K&N cleaning solution and a hose to get it all off (at first the water flowing through it came out black). I re-oiled, let it dry in the sun for a couple hours and re-installed. I actually noticed a significant increase in throttle response and high-end pull. I don't think I will ever let it go past 10,000 miles without a cleaning any more.
