I am a new member and I am really enjoying this forum. I just bought a 1998 C5 convertable 6 speed and the keyless remote is not working. A message is comming up on the dash that says sevice vehicle soon then low tire pressure and finally service tire pressure sensor. The people I bought the Corvette from had me take it to a dealer who did a diagnostic on it and they say that it needs a module reciever + remotes for $969,00. Any sugestions or help would be appreciated.
Look in your manual and it will tell you how to program your remote, if it still doesn't work just change out the $3 battery and then reprogram. Since you have a pre 2000 car, do yourself a favor and turn off the passive mode on the remote.
The TPS (tire pressure sensors) in each tire last about 5 or so years and then have to be changed out. They do not have replacable batteries but can be order for about $50 each. Determine which one is bad and have new one put in at a tire place - search the forum on how to program.
Don't let the dealer take you for big $$$ for something you can do easily yourself.
Also, if you are new to Covettes, it is common to have sticking fuel guage (add Techron), a bad oil sensor reading (sticks all the way up) and rocking seats (seats move a little when driving). None are that big of a deal and can be fixed fairly easily.
It's possible that you may need the module. Both the remote and the tire pressure monitor system are controlled by the same module. I'd certainly try the remote battery and reprogram through the DIC first, but you may have more issues. Corroded grounds or battery connections possible, too. If the dealer diagnostics say the module is bad, I'd get a second opinion from another dealer of repair facility before I laid out almost $1,000 bucks. Make sure the connectors going to the module are clean and tight. I can't look it up at this minute, but I believe the module is located in the back left storage compartment. Maybe someone who has replaced or repaired it before will fill in the blanks here.
The very first thing that you neeed to do is read your Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) and see what codes you have. Write them down and clear then. Then see what ones come back.
Re-program the FOBs and TPS. The instructions are in your owners manual. If you dont have one, there are on line PDF versions that you can get for free!
Sounds like you have more than one issue but doing the above will be a very good start at fixing whats wrong.
Here is how to read your own DTCs:
This is the absolute best C5 Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) web site!!!
Go to “technical data base” and then to “Corvette ECM Computer Codes”. Then select your year car. Read the instructions and then scroll down to the "READ MORE" window to view the code definitions.\
Thank you for all your help, I really appreciate it. I think that it is the reciever because the code came back B0 RFA No Com. I also cleaned the ground connections under the hood and that didn't help. I checked with my friend in the parts department at Chevy and my price for the part is more like $350 instead of $936. Also the reciever circuit does monitor the tire pressures as well. Thanks again for such a quick response and all your help.
The ground for that module is next to the battery.
It goes through splice pack SP-208 which is in the dash on the drivers side on the right hand side of the instrunent panel.
I hope you are successful with the module replacement but, If I were you I would remove the connector and make sure that all the inputs and outputs are there. Have you tried GM Parts Warehouse?? Gene Culley has some great prices! Beats just about everybody!
