Default New Rings Tomorrow

My 2001 coupe goes in the shop tomorrow for the new rings. Anything special I need to look for or be careful of when I get it back? Are most of you who have had it done satisfied with the fix? Thanks...

ask them to measure the piston/cylinder wall clearance. I think the oil consumption issue is more than just rings.

In fact GM, along with the new napier rings, have changed to polymer coated pistons to reduce the piston clearance.

Gm actually bored out my cylinders .5mm and installed oversized pistons.

my cylinder to piston clearance was .004 with a spec of .002

The first question you should ask is if they(the dealer) is doing the teardown, repair, and rebuild, or are they sending out to a engine shop, me personally i would not let the dealership tear apart my engine, just read about the complaints on this board about them f**king up regular repairs, and i might be wrong ,but is the tech trained in engine repair or rebuilds? Hope it works out for you, Good Luck. :)

Does anyone know the date that the new rings were installed in the 2002 non-Z06 models? Supposed to be during the first two weeks of production but I have seen nothing to confirm this.

I had mine done this past week. I've read all the horror stories about GM service and I was more than a little nervous about having this done.

However, I was fortune enough to take mine to a dealership that has a vette tech. He's the only one the dealership let's go into vette engines. Took him dedicated 4 and half days to do the job. I've run 150 miles on it since I picked it up Friday. I can honestly say that at this point, it runs stronger than before, the oil is clear now, and as far as I can tell it hasn't used a drop (exhaust tips are clean for the first time since the car was new). :)

I think the guys that post on GM service have had bad experiances and we hear from them... don't hear much from the happy ones and no I'm not affiliated with GM in any way... you can get a lemon from any line of cars and you can get poopiey service from any dealership depending on which tech they assign to do the job.

I did post on how to break it in,,, the mechanic told me that since there was no cylinder wall work and since the primary oil ring was not replaced, "run it like you want to". I have... :flag

Good luck. Just make sure you talk to the service manager and tell them you expect / demand they put their best on you your investment in their livelihoods.

Had mine done a week ago. So far so good. The dealer did a good job with it and so far I am happy with the repair. If you have an oil consumption problem, you really have no other choice expept selling the car, which I nearly did for a 2002 Z06 in the showroom. Keep ya adsived !

The new pistons and rings began in production in mid April 2001
