I'm installing new tire pressure sensors on a set of wheels I purchased for my 02 Z06. As you know, Z's didn't come with the sensors, so I am not totally familiar with them. I have read the many fine posts on programming them, but the one question I need answered ... what is the torque (if any)on the nut retaining them on the rim?
You will need them to be programmed into the BCM via a GM TECH II. I had a tough time finding a dealer who knew what they were doing. One even said it couldnt be done, NO WAY NO HOW!!!!! Now,,,you know I had to stop by and show him my functional TPS! I called him a DUMB A$$ as I walked out!
Great photo ...just got word that my Firestone WO's have arrived. Called the guy who sold them to me (tires), and he said no problem ... they spend about $900 to get all the proper equipment for the sensors and he would be happy to install them and get the programming etc.
I am looking forward to having the sensors ... it is hard (visually)to tell when the tires are a little low because they are so wide.
You need to figure the correct pressure for your new tires. Most C5 have the best normal tire wear and performance (during normal every day driving) with a pressure between 26-32 PSI COLD. My Z06 P zero 305/30/19" rears do the best at 28 cold and the fronts 285/35/19" do the best at 30 cold. Very even tire wear and best foot print on both tires.
The sensors allow you to have on the fly access to the tire pressures and if theres a slow leak, they will alarm at 24 PSI and allow you to service the tire before it toooooo late!
On the other side of the coin, we traveled from Connecticut to Bowling Green KY to the latest Cruise IN . At the start of the trip it was 65 deg at night. All tire pressures were set at the above specs. By the time we got to KY it was 90 deg and the pressure in the tires was between 45 and 47 lbs. Had to end up readjusting the pressures. The TPS let us know that the pressures were way too high!
Its more important to know the pressures than to depend on the look of the tire.
