I'm not 100% satisfied with my Vortex install and thinking about taking it back off. I do appreciate the extra power, but I have two issues...
1. The install was a nightmare (left the shroud on the car) and I only managed to get the top 4 bolts secured. I have yet to get the bottom two lined up properly and I don't look forward to dismantling it all to try again.
2. I'm not entirely comfortable with the possibility of water ingestion, since this is my daily driver and we do get some pretty heavy rains from time to time. It doesn't help that the previous owner of the car lowered it.
So... anyone ever reversed one of these? I guess the only real trick is to obtain a new radiator shroud and install it. Getting the factory airbox back on is trivial, as should be replacing it with one of the no-cut systems available.
How much does a new radiator shroud cost? Seems like I had heard they were only about $60 from a dealer?
How much trouble is it to actually do the replacement? Should I attempt it at home or should I take it my local mechanic? How long would it take me? Or, how much should I expect a mechanic to charge me for doing it?
I put a Vortex on mine and had the same trouble you did. :)
I took it off and got a Halltech Sidewinder. I picked up a new shroud for like $40 from Fichtner...but I haven't put it on yet. I'm thinking of keeping the cut shroud. The Sidewinder won't pick up water due to being offset, and cold air comes through the shroud opening.
I just replaced my Tric with an 02 z06 air filter lid I also put in a set of z06 screens I left my halltech Mag on and I feel that the car pulls stronger now than with the tric. I would not go back to your stock air lid you can get the 02 Z lid from Ken for about $45. And if you do it go for the screens also I sure feels like the new combo made a big difference and now there shouldn't be any water problems!
The bottom holes are easy to work around... you can just punch them and drill from the bottom.... or use a soildering tool to melt a hole. The install went easy for me.
